CLIVIA
Tutor: Mary Transom
Skill level: All This wall quilt measures 58 x 102cm.
Spend the day creating this tall and elegant Clivia quilt. The shape of the quilt makes it suitable for hanging in narrow spaces. Change the colour of the flowers to two shades of purple or white, and you will have an Agapanthus quilt.
In this fun, easy class you will use machine appliqué and fusible web techniques. Firstly you will prepare the leaves and flowers; these will then be fused to the background and stitched. The sawtooth border will be prepared and attached to the lower part of the quilt. Borders will probably be added to the quilt after the class.
Some simple hand stitching and beading is done after class to complete the quilt. At the end of the day, you should be well on the way to a completed quilt top.

CREATING QUILTS USING A LAYER CAKE
Tutor: Chris Timmins
Skill level: No previous knowledge needed. This class is designed for beginners.
Beginner bonus!: Rulers, mats and rotary cutters will be supplied for use in class by Unique Stitching!
You will learn the basics of quiltmaking while creating with one or two quilts from a ‘layer cake’ (a selection of pre-cut fabrics from a co-ordinating range). A Layer Cake can be purchased from patchwork shops. It contains 40 (10inch) squares of co-ordinated fabrics. If you are unable to find a Layer Cake you like you can select your own fabrics.
Create one or both of the following quilts:
Twisted Layer Cake: Create four large blocks using squares from the Layer Cake pack. Add borders and wedges to make the blocks twist to give an interesting finish. Finished size is 150cm square.
Disappearing Nine Patch: A simple variation on the traditional nine-patch block. It is very easy to make, and looks impressive when finished. This easy quilt pattern is perfect for quilters of all skill levels, including beginners. Finished size is 180cm square.
In the class the basics will be covered:
- Using a rotary cutter
- Cutting straight
- Sewing accurately
- Pressing correctly
- Cutting blocks to make the design
- Joining blocks to create the quilt
- Adding borders
- Mitred corners
- Joining the quilt, batting and backing

LINEAR LANDSCAPES
Tutor: Gloria Loughman
Skill level: All
Using the colours and patterns of the landscape we will create an original design highlighting the contours of the land. Contour lines delineate the gradient of the land and allow us to project wonderful movement and contrast into our design. Focal point, perspective and other basic design principles will be discussed then students will design their own wall hanging working from a photo, sketch or picture.
Students will be guided through a process that involves cutting and fusing the contours, then building up the areas on the batting. Quilting will add further dimension and texture. Fabric painting techniques will be demonstrated and participants will be able to hand paint fabric for special areas such as sky, sea etc.

CLIFTON STARS
Tutor: Christine Porter
Skill level: Beginner with some experience of piecing
Materials fee: $22.25 optional for Tri-Recs templates
Christine describes: “Finding two floor tile blocks: ’54:40 or Fight’ and ‘Treasure Chest’, I put them together to create Clifton Stars. By careful placement of medium, light and dark values and a combination of just two colour palettes – purple and turquoise, a secondary design appears. By extending the triangles into centres of the border, it gives a completely different look to the design. This quilt appears in my book ‘Quilt Designs from Decorative Floor Tiles’, see page 41 (book re-issued as ‘Quilts Beneath Your Feet’).”
“Try this beautiful quilt for yourself in any combination of two colours and remember the more fabrics you use, the more amazing the quilt will look. Techniques learned will be accurate piecing and colour placement.”
