ONE–DAY CLASSES

Inspirational Colouring

Tutor: Kim Bradley

Skill level: All
All handwork

Materials fee: $25 includes all materials required for class including a pre–quilted fabric sandwich, and pencil and paper for notes. Pencils, pastels, pigments, inks and textile medium will all be provided for students to use in the class.

This class will demonstrate how to add a variety of colour items to your work including ink pencils, pastels, pigments and pens. This technique class will teach students how versatile adding colour to your quilts can be – explore adding dimension to appliqué and dimension and depth to quilting.

Totally Tubular Triangles

Tutor: Rita Hutchens

Skill level: Advanced beginner to expert

OPTIONAL: Materials fee: $40 includes 1.1m of high quality batik fabric for all three exercises cut, sewn and pressed into three different strata. Or use your own fabric and sew beforehand.

Class is process oriented. Magic bias friendly, tube strip–piecing technique and a simple formula makes long rows of triangles from strips in any angle or size, including miniature, without paper, templates or waste. Students learn to make bias tubes and work in any angle or size and will complete several exercises, exploring variations of techniques. Lots of information, eye candy and unique ideas for using these triangles to create borders, blocks and components for quilts will be provided. Click here for Class Requirements.

Free–motion Quilting: A Great Beginning

Tutor: Deborah Louie

Skill level: Beginners to intermediate

Materials fee: $5 for extensive notes

A technique class: If you've always wanted to free–motion quilt your own work, this class is for you. Deborah will guide you through her very popular techniques, step–by–step, to get you free–motion quilting in no time.

This practical approach will have you quilting swirls, flowers, hearts, geometric patterns, stars and more by the end of the day. You will even quilt with some stencils for sashes, borders and fillers. Click here for Class Requirements.

Precision Piecing

Tutor: Philippa Naylor

Skill level: All

Materials fee: $8 for detailed instructions, pattern and colour copies

A practical workshop to help you achieve prize–winning accuracy – there'll be masses of techniques, information and advice on every stage of the piecing process. Fabric selection, using the correct rotary–cutting methods, sewing accurate seams, matching points and pressing are examined in detail with extensive demonstrations. TWO–DAY CLASSES

Antique Sampler

Tutor: Sue Daley

Skill level: Basic patchwork skills needed
All handwork

Materials fee: A: $70 (required) for pattern incl pre–cut papers and acrylic templates. And optional: B: $60 for a fabric starter pack incl background plus assorted fabric, totalling 2.7m fabric.

This is a project class that will cover: English paper piecing, fussy–cutting fabric, needleturn appliqué, reverse appliqué, bias–strip appliqué. Instruction will be give to master all the above techniques, while working on the Antique Sampler quilt.

Confetti Naturescapes

Tutor: Noriko Endo

Skill level: Intermediate
All handwork

Materials fee: $20 for patterns, papers, paints.

Bring assorted fabric scraps in a variety of light, medium and dark. Students will create impressionist naturescapes, using machine embroidery techniques, working with transparency and texture, quilting and painting.

Pemberley

Tutor: Katrina Hadjimichael

Skill level: Confident beginner, some appliqué experience an advantage

Materials fee: $105 includes extensive notes, photographs and patterns organised into a folder, plus the full kit of laser cut paper templates and Perspex peepers, which have been cut specifically for Pemberley.

This exquisite design was inspired by an 18th century quilt featured in the book 'Quilt Treasures of Great Britain'. Whilst the class will concentrate on appliqué skills (English basting method) required for the centre of the quilt, all patterns and a kit of paper–piecing templates and perspex fussy–cutting templates to make the entire quilt will be available.

Mystery AppliquÉ

Tutor: Michele Hill

Skill level: All

A project and machine appliqué technique class based on designs from the Royal Exhibition Building.

From Michele: "Come and join me as we explore the history and splendour of Melbourne's Royal Exhibition building. I have appliqué projects 'in progress' that reflect the ornamental patterns on the interior of the building… so for now the projects are a mystery! Several of the patterns can be turned into blocks, centre medallions or long strippies that will allow you the choice of making a bed quilt, table or bed runner, cushions or wall hanging.

All patterns will be provided. Along with the history of the building you will also learn to perfect your machine appliqué. You should complete a small project in the workshop." Click here for Class Requirements.

Jacobean Star

Tutor: Chris Jurd

Skill level: Experience with foundation piecing desirable but not essential

Materials fee: $10 for pattern, foundation patterns, templates and papers for centre

A project class to make this foundation–pieced spinning circle centre for a machine pieced eight–pointed star. Learn to machine–piece curves in the star background, sew set–in seams and sew mitred seams on the borders. The Patterned Landscape

Tutor: Gloria Loughman

Skill level: All

Materials fee: No kit but Tear–away, Steam a Seam and suitable hand–dyed fabrics will be available (optional).

Choose an interesting tree shape and position it on a background of wonderful shapes to create your own unique abstract landscape quilt. let go of perspective and realism and enjoy building a stunning background using circles, squares, ovals, diamonds or irregular shapes. Shapes can be overlapped or discreet units. Bring your own tree design or use one of Gloria's tree patterns which include boab trees, fan palms, old gnarled trunks or free flowing branches.

Learn about colour and design principles so that your finished quilt will be an eye–catching celebration of colour. Some decorative stitching will be completed, and then most of the background will be stitched as part of the quilting process. Crazy About Curves

Students will quickly master the basic concepts of Vikki's flexible, 'no rules, no fear' technique. With this method –a meld of piecing and machine appliqué – learn to create even sharp curves and narrow points effortlessly. NO measuring seam allowances, NO easing together unruly seams and NO matching points. Begin by using a small, simple teaching pattern and quickly progress to designing a free–form pattern.

Includes basic and advanced curved construction techniques, simple improvisation, hints on colour, contrasts, texture, and creating movement in your work; painless mitring, splicing seams; finishing techniques and ideas, curvy borders and extending the quilt top design into the borders and binding. FOUR–DAY MASTERCLASS

Creating A Realistic Landscape

Tutor: Kay Haerland

Skill level: Enthusiastic beginner + up

Materials fee: $12 for class notes, shared materials, paints etc

Working with a small–format landscape as a project, you will learn Kay's approach and techniques for creating realistic landscape quilts.

A large number of skills will be covered in this challenging master class, including fabric selection, perspective and light concepts, plus embellishment approaches for a variety of surfaces (water, ground, vegetation etc). You will be transforming your fabrics with lace, stamping, tulle, embroidery, heat stressing, 3D effects and threadwork with water–soluble stabiliser.
