William de Morgan

Tutor: Michele Hill

Skill level: All

A quilt project and machine appliqué technique class. This quilt has been inspired by historical tiles of William De Morgan (1839-1917). His process of development is fascinating and Michele had the wonderful opportunity of photographing a huge collection in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery in 2010. Only a few colours were used in the original tiles and this is reflected in the quilt. So inevitably the workshop is not just an appliqué workshop but also a history lesson and picture show. Sawtooth Patterns

Tutor: Rita Hutchens

Skill level: Advanced beginner-expert: must be able to use a rotary cutter and sew an accurate ¼″ seam

Let go of your fear and make the bias your friend. Strip-piece half-square triangles and sawtooth borders from a checkerboard any size including miniature, without paper, templates, waste or problems with the bias. Participants become experts at this technique by making a stash of Sawtooth borders, in four different coordinated colourways. These are combined with each other to develop patterns which will compose a small quilt with a unique ethnic look and feel. This technique is a must for your quilting tool box. FMQ: Coloured Flowers, Leaves & Feathers

Tutor: Deborah Louie

Skill level: Intermediate

Materials fee: $5 for notes

This is a practical technique workshop, but a small project will be started. You will learn: Free-motion quilting of flowers, leaves, tendrils, formal feathers, echo, shadow and shells background quilting. Also colouring techniques using colouring pencils are used in this class.

Outcomes will include: More confidence with free-motion quilting, and free forming original-design flowers for blocks, borders and backgrounds. This is quilting that looks like appliqué - it's a flowing, soft, quick and easy technique to give your quilts a new individual style. Click here for Class Requirements.

TAP that Book

Tutor: Lesley Riley

Skill level: All
All handwork

Materials fee: $15

A project class where you will learn about TAP transfers, altering techniques, fabric collage skills and 8-fold Lutradur book construction. You will create a small Lutradur and fabric book. In her first book, Quilted Memories, Lesley provided in-depth fabric collage instruction. Lesley's second book, Fabric Memory Books, explored the many ways fabric can be used to create unique, non-traditional books. Her third book, Fabulous Fabric Art with Lutradur covered a myriad of techniques using Lutradur, an excellent material for constructing books. In her fourth book, Create with Transfer Artist Paper, Lesley explores iron-on TAP transfer techniques. Combine the skills presented in all four books in this hands-on book-making experience!

You will learn how to pattern Lutradur for your pages and then create pages of nature- and bird-themed fabric collage with supplied TAP Transfer Paper images, text and your fabric. You will leave class with a beautiful book in hand or well on your way to completing a very personal work of art. This is a chance for those new to either fibre art or bookmaking to explore either medium, as well as a wonderful new approach for seasoned book or fibre artists. Apply the techniques to make art quilts. Click here for Class Requirements.
