ONE–DAY CLASSES

Inspirational Colouring

Tutor: Kim Bradley

Skill level: All
All handwork

Materials fee: $25 includes all materials required for class including a pre-quilted fabric sandwich, and pencil and paper for notes. Pencils, pastels, pigments, inks and textile medium will all be provided for students to use in the class.

This class will demonstrate how to add a variety of colour items to your work including ink pencils, pastels, pigments and pens. This technique class will teach students how versatile adding colour to your quilts can be, explore adding dimension to appliqué and dimension and depth to quilting.

Silk Naturescapes

Tutor: Noriko Endo

Skill level: All

Materials fee: $20

Experiment with colour and dyeing in an instant and convenient way, using dye in a zip lock bag with a small amount of water. Create an impressionist 'naturescape' image in silk using silk strips, fibres ribbons, yarns and leftover silk fabric scraps. A final layer of tulle completes this unique dimensional project. Arabesque Sampler

Tutor: Michele Hill

Skill level: All

A quilt project and machine appliqué technique class. 'Arabesque' was inspired by the ornamental decorative panels of the 15th and 16th centuries. All block designs will be provided in the workshop but you will probably only get one to two blocks completed on the day. Instructions to complete the quilt will be provided. Mirror Image Magic

Tutor: Rita Hutchens

Skill level: All; must be able to use a rotary cutter and sew accurate ¼ inch seams

Strip-piece mirror image bias tubes to create Chevron and Zigzag patterns any angle or size. Intuitive, playful, bias-friendly, template, paper and waste free strip-piecing method is a cross between Seminole and Bargello with a twist. Rita encourages students to tweak your brain and think out of the box to create your own unique patterns for components and borders in quilts and garments. Lots of eye candy and samples are provided. Machine Appliqué Techniques

Skill level: Beginner

Materials fee: $5 for extensive notes

If you'd like to explore the possibilities of creating fast, effective machine appliqué, this techniques class is the perfect start. Learn blind-hem appliqué while stitching a Drunkard's Path background block, then free-motion appliqué a flower, stem and leaves with beautiful texture inside. Blanket stitch another flower and decorate this flower with some beautiful decorative machine stitches. Learn to achieve quick, easy and professional-looking machine appliqué. TWO–DAY CLASSES

Lots of Dots

Skill level: Experience with foundation piecing desirable but not essential

Materials Fee: $10 for pattern and foundation papers

Book a spot in this technique class to learn or perfect your foundation-piecing skills while working on blocks from one of Chris' favourite quilts. Expert tips from an experienced teacher will guide you all the way. Expect to complete one or more circle blocks from Lots of Dots - a quilt which will be featured in the Best of the Best exhibition at AQC. Appleberries

Skill level: Basic patchworking skills required

Materials fee: A: $60 (required) for patterns, papers and templates, and B: $22 (optional) for fabric starter pack

Appleberries is a medallion quilt with a fresh, fruity twist. In this class you will cover several techniques: curved English paper piecing, needleturn appliqué and bias-strip appliqué. Longbourne

Tutor: Katrina Hadjimichael

Skill level: Confident beginner

Materials fee: $100 for pattern, all laser cut papers and Perspex 'peepers' to make the entire quilt.

'Longbourne' is the third in a series of quilts Katrina has named after the houses featured in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. The quilt is a celebration of English paper piecing and fussy-cutting in a medallion style. The centre of the quilt is reminiscent of the style of Elizabethan crewel embroidery, featuring the Tudor Rose, pomegranates and tulips. Students will learn all the techniques required to complete the quilt. The method of appliqué used is the English basting method where fabrics are basted over paper templates then appliquéd. You will begin the centre appliqué panel and components of the rest of the quilt will be completed. Click here for Class Requirements.

 

It's All About the Colour

Tutor: Gloria Loughman

Materials fee: No kit but Tearaway, Steam a Seam and suitable hand-dyed fabrics will be available (optional).

Colour is addictive, and for some it's the most powerful ingredient when making a quilt. Learn how to choose colour schemes and how to flow the colour across the surface of your quilt creating harmony and drama.

Use diamonds, squares or rectangles to build up a design that is visually exciting and unique. Stitching decoration can be complex or simple but is an important part of the design process and a number of stitching techniques will be discussed. Techniques for accurate cutting and placement will be demonstrated as well as edge treatments. Click here for Class Requirements.

 

Curved Piecing

Tutor: Philippa Naylor

Skill level: Confident beginner and beyond

Materials fee: $8

Learn Philippa's unique award-winning curved piecing method. Students are supplied with a master pattern for a small curved quilt and learn how to make templates the easy way. Detailed demonstrations will show how to cut curved shapes with a rotary cutter. Students begin sewing their mini quilt top using precise techniques which are sure to give wonderful results.

Learn how to add to the original pattern to increase the size of the mini quilt to create a bigger piece of work if desired. Quilting ideas such as free-motion and regular machine quilting techniques, as well as edge finishing techniques will be discussed. Pictured is an example of the technique, not class project. Improvisation and Simple Fabric Manipulation

Tutor: Vikki Pignatelli

Skill level: All

This relaxing, impromptu approach to piecing curves offers students total freedom in quiltmaking. Students begin the class with a brief demo to learn the basic concept of Vikki's Crazy About Curves technique. Then with a play-as-you-go spirit, students apply the fundamental technique to create improvisational 'blocks' of any shape (four-sided, circles, ovals, curvy rectangles or teardrops) and learn to arrange them into a free-form contemporary quilt. Students will also learn some simple fabric manipulations such as curved strip piecing, pleating fabric and using contrast strips, tubes and faced three-dimensional patches in their work.

This class includes: Short demonstration of Vikki's Crazy about Curves technique, basic and advanced improvisational construction techniques, simple dimensional fabric manipulations, how to machine sew using the improvisational technique, plus hints and suggestions regarding colour, contrasts, texture, and creating movement in your work, painless mitering, splicing seams (basic and improvisational), how to finish using improvisational techniques and ideas, improvisational borders and bindings, Vikki's whole-cloth finishing techniques.
