Bringing the world of quilts to your door…
AP&Q AQC Challenge
After a thrilling response to the inaugural challenge in 2009 when we partnered with Australian Patchwork & Quilting to run this challenge, we look forward to seeing the 2010 entries, this time with the theme of Remember. The winners will be announced at the Cocktail Party on Wednesday, April 28.
Twelve by Twelve
A world premiere – this collaborative art quilt project is a captivating concept, played out online by quilters who mostly have only met online. In twelve themed challenges, twelve quilters have produced a twelve inch square quilt. Each set of twelve quilts fits together in a mosaic; resulting in twelve mosaics from 144 quilts in total. Themes include chocolate, shelter, community, mathematics… and finally twelve! The quilters are from Australia, Belgium, the UK and the USA , and include our own Brenda Gael Smith and Kirsten Duncan who will be there to
tell you all about the project in floortalks at selected times.
Out of the Fold
From the UK, and compiled especially for AQC by Annette Morgan (past President of the Quilters’ Guild of The British Isles), is this art quilt exhibition from the group Out of the Fold. These contemporary quilters use all types of techniques and mixed media. Annette mentors the group and will also have some of her work on show.
Best of the Best
See the best quilts from every annual state guild quilt show in Australia and the NAN ZQ Quilts Aotearoa exhibition in New Zealand. The display includes the Best of Show quilt from each – these will be judged at AQC for the National Quilt Award.
Ten Years of Quilters Companion
A selection of cover quilts from the last ten years will be shown in this exhibition which celebrates the tenth birthday of Quilters Companion magazine.See the quilts you loved on the cover, in real life, here at AQC.
Quilts by Kim McLean
Australian quilter Kim McLean is possibly better known overseas than here at home due to the awards that she has won at USA quilt shows and the coverage of her work in USA magazine Quilters Newsletter (she has had quilts on the cover several times!). Kim also won Best of Show twice in the Sydney Quilt Show in the early 1990s. We are pleased to present a showcase of Kim’s quilts including the early reproduction styles through to her later work featuring bright Kaffe Fasset fabrics.
Something Special
Down Under Quilts have invited some of their friends from around the world to share some quilts in this special display. Further details to be announced later.
State of the Art Quilt 10
See a snapshot of quilt art from Queensland in this juried exhibition by members of Queensland Quilters Inc. This year jurors are Dianne Firth (ACT) and Helen Sanderson (Qld). The exhibition has an open theme
allowing entrants to explore a variety of subject matter and inspiration.
Presented by Queensland Quilters
Textile Tantrums
Dale Rollerson of The Thread Studio will show the results of their latest challenge. With a title like this, we’re expecting to see some interesting techniques … ripped and torn perhaps? See it first at AQC.
Presented by The Thread Studio
Annette Gero's Military Quilts
Quilt historian Annette Gero has acquired several 19th century rare British military quilts. These are made from thousands of tiny pieces of woollen fabric from military uniforms, and are fascinating to see due to the intricacy of the work and the fabrics used. Annette will be on hand to discuss these interesting pieces which have not
been seen before.
Teach Me
A favourite display among AQC visitors are quilts by our talented tutors. As well as fabulous teachers, they are of course, amazing quilters, winning swathes of awards between them, and pushing the boundaries of design and workmanship.
See and sigh…
Rajah Winner 2009 - Gloria Loughman
Over the last 20 years Gloria has dabbled in many areas of quilting including strip piecing, bargello, colourwash, fabric dyeing and painting, machine embroidery and landscape. After completing some studies in design and colour as part of a diploma of art in 1996, she began to make large vivid landscape quilts depicting the Australian bush. These quilts have won many major awards in Australia, Europe, Japan and the USA . Enjoy this work by one of Australia’s premier quilters.
Roses from the Heart
Christina Henri is a conceptual artist from Hobart, Tasmania. Christina’s Roses from the HeartTM project will be a memorial to all convict women transported to Australia. At AQC she will present a display of bonnets, a small token of her ultimate aim of producing a bonnet for every one of the 25,266 female convicts who arrived
here from 1788 to 1853. To be part of history, join in the project by creating a bonnet; download a pattern from her website: www.christinahenri.com.au
